SMALL FACES
The Small Faces were an English rock and roll band from east London, heavily influenced by American rhythm and blues. The group was founded in 1965 by members Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones, and Jimmy Winston, although by 1966 Winston was replaced by Ian McLagan as the band's keyboardist.
The band is remembered as one of the most acclaimed and influential mod groups of the 1960s, With memorable hit songs such as "Itchycoo Park", "Lazy Sunday", "All or Nothing", "Tin Soldier", and their concept album Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, they later evolved into one of the UK's most successful psychedelic acts before disbanding in 1969. After the Small Faces disbanded, three of the members were joined by Ronnie Wood as guitarist, and Rod Stewart as their lead vocalist, both from The Jeff Beck Group, and the new line-up was renamed the Faces. A revived version of the original Small Faces existed from 1975 to 1978.
They are also acknowledged as being one of the biggest original influences on the Britpop movement of the 1990s.
Despite the fact they were together just four years in their original incarnation, the Small Faces' music output from the mid to late sixties remains among the most acclaimed British mod and psychedelic music of that era.
In 1996, the Small Faces were awarded the Ivor Novello Outstanding Contribution to British Music "Lifetime Achievement" award.

Though they consistently checked in as superstars in their native England - on par critically and commercially with contemporaries the Who and the Rolling Stones - the psychedelic, R & B-fueled rock act the Small Faces failed to catch fire in America. They did succeed at indelibly reshaping British rock, however, with such singles as "Itchycoo Park," "Lazy Sunday," and "Sha-La-La-La-Lee," as well as their magnum opus album, Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (1968). This retrospective homage to the band brings into a single collection 27 performances culled from different concerts and television broadcasts, including renditions of all the aforementioned singles plus nine tunes from Ogden's. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi. Small Faces' first album for Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label originally appeared in two different forms in England (where it was known as Small Faces) and America, and the two song lineups have been combined on an early-'90s American Sony Music reissue: There Are But Four Small Faces. The music here is much more fully developed and experimental than their preceding album, still largely R & B-based (apart from the delightfully trippy "Itchycoo Park," the band's sole American hit) but with lots of unusual sounds and recording techniques being attempted. ~ Bruce Eder
The 1997 release of SMALL FACES contains 5 additional tracks not contained on the original release. The Small Faces: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ian "Mac" McLagan (vocals, guitar, organ); Ronnie "Plonk" Lane (vocals, organ); Kenney Jones (drums).Includes liner notes by John Reed and Tony Brainsby. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley and Simon Heyworth. In 1965, Small Faces came blasting out of England with style, wild abandon, and hits. But those hits were limited to the United Kingdom and Europe, failing to make inroads in the United States until the band's restructuring as The Faces in 1970. Much like the early Who, Small Faces had an exuberance that threatened to detonate the band's songs but instead kept the players rolling forward with unrelenting fervor. Small Faces' debut album shows a band able to both tackle tunes from the belly of American R & B and to offer up its own bracing originals. Check out "It's Too Late," impressive by any standards but all the more so when one considers that these guys were barely into their '20s. Steve Marriott, a singer who could shout with the best of them, fronted Small Faces. His rasp is infectious, believable, and highly controlled, never sounding like the affectation of a young guy who wants to sound like an old bluesman. Those who are only familiar with Small Faces from the band's later incarnation as the Rod Stewart-fronted Faces should look into SMALL FACES for an earful of how it all began.

Personnel: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ronnie Lane (guitar); Kenney Jones (drums); Ian McLagan (bass). This release features a special gatefold LP-style CD sleeve. The Small Faces' albums have been repackaged many times, and in greater number than their few original titles should allow. THE AUTUMN STONE, however, is a bracing collection of odds and ends, hits, and live tracks that was released in 1969, following the departure of founder and frontman Steve Marriott. The title track alone is worth the price of admission, of a piece with the Small Faces' previous album, OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.A few pieces are clearly unfinished ("Collibosher" is little more than an instrumental backing track), but even these show Marriott and Lane's songwriting prowess reaching new peaks. The five live numbers on THE AUTUMN STONE prove what England knew but America didn't discover until the band reemerged as The Faces-the Small Faces were a blistering performance outfit. They are a '60s band worth not only remembering but also celebrating.
