Ocean of Confusion is the third greatest hits album by the Screaming Trees. The album chronicles their career from the time they signed to Epic Records until their final album, Dust. The band's years on SST Records are represented on a separate, earlier-released compilation, Anthology: SST Years 1985-1989. The tracks on Ocean of Confusion were personally chosen by the band's lead vocalist, Mark Lanegan, and all other aspects of the compilation were overseen by Lanegan, as well.

Full title: Ocean of Confusion: Songs of Screaming Trees 1989-1996.Screaming Trees are often incorrectly lumped in with Seattle's countless 1990s grunge bands. While they shared a club scene and a love of classic rock with those groups, the Trees were always an island unto themselves. Heavily indebted to '60s psychedelia, they were virtually alone among their peers in veering closer to the Electric Prunes than to Black Sabbath. In the first half of their career, the band recorded for SST Records, churning out a NUGGETS-friendly sound full of swirling fuzztone guitars and serpentine vocal melodies. OCEAN OF CONFUSION documents the latter days of the Trees, after stepping up to the majors. By this time, they were less slavishly devoted to the sounds of the '60s, and had upped the rock crunch of their sound considerably. The band's only real "hit," 1992's "Nearly Lost You," is an endearing mix of heavy-rock riffs and Motown melodicism, but much of the material here finds the group aiming for a modernized version of Led Zeppelin's progressive blues-rock, led by Gary Lee Conner's fiery guitar and Mark Lanegan's rough-edged baritone. OCEAN OF CONFUSION stands to prove that there was life beyond Nirvana in early-'90s Seattle.
Track Listing: 1. Ivy, 2. Walk Through to This Side, 3. Lines & Circles, 4. She Knows, 5. Shadow Song, 6. Grey Diamond Desert, 7. Smoke Rings, 8. Second I Awake, The, 9. Invisible Lantern, 10. Even If, 11. Direction of the Sun, 12. Night Comes Creeping
Screaming Trees: Mark Lanegan (vocals); Gary Lee Conner (guitar); Van Conner (bass); Barrett Martin (drums).Recorded at Baby Monster and Sear Sound, New York. The commercial breakthrough for this Seattle foursome came with their song "Nearly Lost You" from the soundtrack to the 1992 Cameron Crowe film SINGLES. That song, included here, is a powerful slice of dramatic rock that's only vaguely related to the grunge scene into which the Screaming Trees were unfairly lumped. While the group's major-label debut, 1991's UNCLE ANESTHESIA, had its metallic elements, the band mostly favored a '70s-style brand of neo-psychedelia more indebted to TOMMY-era Who and other FM radio stalwarts than to punkier grunge forebears. Mark Lanegan's classic-rock voice and Gary Connor's thunderous guitar give this album a much more commercially viable sound than the group's earlier albums. SWEET OBLIVION is a minor classic of grunge-era commercial alternative music.
