RINGO STARR
Richard Starkey, MBE (born 7 July 1940), better known by his stage name Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer-songwriter, and actor who gained worldwide fame as the drummer for The Beatles. When the band formed in 1960, Starr belonged to another Liverpool band, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. He became The Beatles' drummer in August 1962, taking over from Pete Best. In addition to his contribution as drummer, Starr featured as lead vocals on a number of successful Beatles songs (in particular, "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Yellow Submarine", and The Beatles version of "Act Naturally"), as co-writer with the song "What Goes On" and primary writer with "Don't Pass Me By", and "Octopus's Garden".
As drummer for The Beatles, Starr was musically creative, and his contribution to the band's music has received high praise from notable drummers in more recent times. Starr described himself as "your basic offbeat drummer with funny fills", technically limited by being a left-handed person playing a right-handed kit. Drummer Steve Smith said that Starr's popularity "brought forth a new paradigm" where "we started to see the drummer as an equal participant in the compositional aspect" and that Starr "composed unique, stylistic drum parts for The Beatles songs".
Starr is the most documented and critically acclaimed actor-Beatle, playing a central role in several Beatles films, and appearing in numerous other movies, both during and after his career with The Beatles. After The Beatles' break-up in 1970, Starr achieved solo musical success with several singles and albums, and recorded with each of his fellow ex-Beatles as they too developed their post-Beatle musical careers. He has also been featured in a number of TV documentaries, hosted TV shows, and narrated the first two series of the children's television series Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends. He currently tours with the All-Starr Band, making stops in such cities as New York and Boston, MA.

Additional guest artists: Jim Keltner, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker. For his Atlantic Records debut, Ringo tried to duplicate the critical and commercial success of RINGO and GOODNIGHT VIENNA by drawing on the talents of many of the same guest musicians who were featured on those albums. There are many highlights, including "Cookin' (In The Kitchen of Love)," an upbeat John Lennon song that features a playful Lennon on piano and backing vocals and "I'll Still Love You," a dark, haunting pop song that was written by George Harrison. Other celebrity guests who drop in to help their old pal Ringo include Paul McCartney, who wrote and performed on the ballad "Pure Gold" and Eric Clapton, who wrote and played on the breezy pop rocker "This Be Called A Song." Lesser known tracks like the thumping, laid-back rocker "Dose of Rock and Roll" and an energetic version of the sixties R & B hit "Hey Baby" ensure that ROTOGRAVURE is entertaining from start to finish.

The fact that he failed does not mean that RINGO THE FOURTH will not be of interest to Beatles fans. Starr wrote most of the songs with his producer, Vini Poncia. While the majority of the Starr/Poncia compositions are decent pop-rock, they generally do not measure up to previous Starr/Poncia compositions like Starr's 1974 hit "Oh My My."Ringo's versions of Gamble & Huff's Philly-soul classic "Drowning In The Sea Of Love" and Allen Toussaint's "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley" are clearly the best songs on this album and suggest that Ringo may have been better off letting other people write songs for him to sing. Backed by slick LA Session players like drummer Steve Gadd and keyboardist David Foster, Ringo gives respectable vocal performances that stay within his limited range and make the most of his loveable ole Ringo persona.

Ringo Starr defined his solo career through his collaborations, scoring his first big hit with the assistance of his fellow Fabs and later sustaining himself through his All-Starr Band, so his decision to produce 2010's Y Not on his own appears to be a big deal. Of course, those collaborators sharpened Ringo's focus but never altered his amiable pop - that friendly, shambling sound is Ringo, something Y Not proves without a shadow of a doubt by sounding virtually interchangeable with its immediate predecessors despite a production that inexplicably feels like a response to George Harrison's 1987 comeback, Cloud Nine. Since Ringo bathes himself in unrepentant nostalgia, this 20-year flashback is odd but appropriate because Starr is all about cheerful reminders of happy times filled with Peace Dreams and memories of "The Other Side of Liverpool." Starr does have some famous friends to bolster his journey through the past - Van Dyke Parks co-wrote "Walk with You" but his presence is obscured by a Paul McCartney harmony, Joe Walsh is partially responsible for the stiffly thumping "Fill in the Blanks," Richard Marx keeps the '80s nostalgia flowing on "Mystery of the Night," while Joss Stone valiantly tries to pull the proceedings into the present on the album-closing "Who's Your Daddy," a song where Ringo comfortably plays second banana - but he has no overall collaborator; he's steering this ship himself and has no desire to depart from his familiar course home. Again, like there was on Liverpool 8, there is charm to Starr's tried and true: exciting it is not but it's as comforting as an old friend who doesn't change, he just stays the same. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Personnel: Ringo Starr (vocals, drums); Doug Riley, James Newton Howard (conductor); Git-tar, Push-a-lone (guitar); Hamisch Bisonette (synthesizers); Morris Lane (keyboards); Diesel (bass); Vini Poncia's Peaking Duck Orchestra & Chorus. Digitally remastered by Victor Anesini (CBS Records Studios, New York, New York).Realizing that his hard-earned reputation as an important rock & roll artist was rapidly slipping away from him, Ringo made an all-out attempt to revitalize his career in 1978. Hot on the heels of a bizarre, though basically entertaining network TV special, Ringo released BAD BOY, a stripped down album that seemed to be his attempt to get back to some serious music making. Eschewing the all-star approach that Starr had employed so successfully in the mid-seventies, BAD BOY is the work of Ringo and some uncredited session musicians. Starr and his band manage to inject some real rock & roll feeling into the proceedings. The highpoints of BAD BOY are Starr's earnest pop-rock rendition of Gallagher & Llyle's "Heart On My Sleeve" and a fun, good-natured version of The Supremes "Where Did Our Love Go?" Though BAD BOY is one of Ringo's lesser works, it goes down easy and showed that Ringo was on the road back to a full musical recovery.
Personnel includes: Ringo Starr (vocals, guitar, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, drums, percussion, tamborine, bongos, handclaps); Tom Petty, Alanis Morissette (vocals); Mark Hudson (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, piano, keyboards, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass, percussion, handclaps, background vocals); Steve Dudas (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, handclaps); George Harrison (electric & slide guitars); Joe Walsh (electric & slide guitars, background vocals); Steve Cropper (electric guitar); Steven Tyler (harmonica, background vocals); Jim Cox (piano, B3 organ, Wurlitzer, synthesizer); Paul McCartney (bass, background vocals); Timothy B. Schmit, Nils Lofgren, Brian Wilson, Ozzy Osbourne, Scott Weiland (background vocals).Recorded at WHATINTHEWHATHE? Studios, Los Angeles, California. As Ringo himself writes on the CD jacket, "Life is life-this was just a record." Though we prefer our records to have a little more pretense than that, we're happy to report that VERTICAL MAN is a perfectly good pop record, a playful one that knows its limitations and isn't embarrassed to flaunt them. Basically, Starr doesn't have a clue how to write a song that doesn't sound like one of his fellow ex-Beatles didn't write it for him, and where on past albums he often fought that instinct, on VERTICAL MAN he gives into it. Bridges sound more than a little like alternate takes on "I Am The Walrus" and "Strawberry Fields Forever," lyrics refer not so subtly to John and even Yoko, and a good deal of the choruses have the can't-help-but-shake-your-head feel of Paul at his poppiest. In short, Starr, along with co-writer and producer Mark Hudson, has crafted a more than decent Rutles album. Which we mean as a compliment. Though we will be having a talk with whoever suggested Starr remake "Love Me Do" as a slowed-down swamp blues.
