MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER
Mary Chapin Carpenter (born February 21, 1958) is an American folk and country music artist. Carpenter spent several years singing in Washington, D.C. clubs before signing in the late 1980s with Columbia Records, who marketed her as a country singer. Carpenter's first album, 1987's Hometown Girl, did not produce any singles, although 1989's State of the Heart and 1990's Shooting Straight in the Dark each produced four Top 20 hits on the Billboard country singles charts.
Carpenter's most successful album to date remains 1992's Come On Come On, which yielded seven charting country singles and was certified quadruple platinum in the U.S. for sales exceeding four million copies. She followed it with Stones in the Road (1994) and A Place in the World (1996), which both featured hit singles. In the 2000s, Carpenter's albums departed both thematically and musically from her early work, becoming less radio-friendly and more focused on societal and political issues. Her most acclaimed and most topical album to date, The Calling, was released in March 2007. She followed that with The Age of Miracles in April 2010.
Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards, and is the only artist to have won four consecutive Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, which she received from 1992 to 1995. As of 2005, she had sold more than 12 million records.

With one foot in adult pop, one in country, and one in singer/songwriterdom, Mary Chapin Carpenter has always been tough to pin down. TIME*SEX*LOVE probably won't make it any easier for listeners to pigeonhole her, either. The album represents all the facets of Carpenter's work, from moody folk-rock ("Swept Away") to bluesy, Bonnie Raitt-like grit ("Simple Life"). Along the way, a number of other influences peek their head into the mix. The baroque, harmony-laden sound of "Maybe World" is redolent of PET SOUNDS-era Beach Boys, while the sparkling pop-rock of "The Long Way Home" is reminiscent of Carpenter's take on Lucinda Williams's "Passionate Kisses." "In the Name of Love" even employs a sitar as a key element. Clearly, Carpenter is an artist whose only unwavering characteristic is a commitment to intelligent songwriting. When it comes to stylistic detours, she shows an appealing tendency to wander the map.

Usually, an artist will save live versions and hard-to-find songs for a box set, but Mary Chapin Carpenter has never played by the rules. Ostensibly a "greatest hits" package, PARTY DOLL is a creative collection that's a must-have for any fan. The CD is packed with live versions of some of her most popular songs, recorded at some unique places. For example, the version of her breakthrough hit "Down At the Twist & Shout" is taken from her performance at the 1997 Super Bowl, while a fierce version of "Can't Take Love For Granted" comes from a "Late Show with David Letterman" appearance. Many of the live tracks are acoustic and dramatically reworked, like the hushed, slowed-down rendition of "Quittin' Time." PARTY DOLL also includes songs Carpenter recorded for other projects, including "Grow Old With Me" (from a John Lennon tribute album) and "10,000 Miles" (from the "Fly Away Home" movie soundtrack). Three new songs round out the CD, including the gospel-influenced "Almost Home" and a version of Mick Jagger's "Party Doll." By making nearly every track a collectible, Carpenter turns PARTY DOLL into a unique "event" instead of a run-of-the-mill hits package.
