Married to the Blues is one of Mark Hummel's finest releases, since it gives him ample opportunity to showcase his greasy, overdriven harmonica. The songs themselves aren't particularly distinctive, but they are good vehicles for him to strut his stuff, and that alone makes it a thoroughly enjoyable record. ~ Thom Owens

In the home video release Mark Hummel's Harmonica Party - Amplified Blues Harp from Chicago to the West Coast, Hummel - vocalist, pop composer, and one of the key pros of west coast blues harmonica (or blues harp), alongside contemporaries Junior Wells, Little Walter and Billy Boy Arnold - unveils the mysteries and complexities of his style to aspiring harmonica players who seek detailed instruction and wish to scale new heights of performance - specifically those intermediates with the know-how to play single notes and bend a step-down on a 2-3 draw. Hummel covers first, second and third diatonic positions in the first two-thirds of the program, and explains how to play chromatically, ala Wells and Walter, in the final third. He also addresses head shakes, lipping tricks, tongue blocking techniques, and many other performance aspects. This release garnered the "Instructional Video of the Year" award from Real Blues Magazine. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
