HUMBLE PIE
Humble Pie was a rock band from England, finding success both in the UK and the US. They are remembered for songs such as "30 Days in the Hole", "I Don't Need No Doctor", and "Natural Born Bugie". The original band lineup featured Steve Marriott from Small Faces, vocalist and guitarist Peter Frampton from The Herd, Greg Ridley former bassist from Spooky Tooth and seventeen-year-old drummer Jerry Shirley.

It would probably have been more fitting to credit 2005's The Atlanta Years solely to Steve Marriott, as he's the only recognizable name from Humble Pie here. The story goes something like this - circa 1982 and 1983 (immediately after a briefly reunited Humble Pie called it quits once again), Marriott regularly gigged and recorded in the Atlanta area. And despite the fact that Marriott did play other places during this time, it's referred to as his "Atlanta Years," which this 17-track release focuses on. With countless veteran rockers trading in their blues-rock and blue jeans for synths and headbands during this era, Marriott admirably sticks to his stylistic guns here, as evidenced by such bluesy, funky, and soulful tracks as "Heartbreaker," "Trouble You Don't Fool Me," and "I Need More." Also rounding out the set are live renditions of several Humble Pie classics, including elongated versions of "Thirty Days in the Hole" and "I Don't Need No Doctor," as well as a 20-minute phone interview with one of Marriott's former wives. While The Atlanta Years is certainly not a wise starting point to discover the great Humble Pie (search out one of their many comps of early-'70s material), it does serve as a taster of what one of rock's most underrated vocalists was up to during the early '80s. ~ Greg Prato

With Thunderbox, it's clear that most of the inspiration has left Humble Pie, as the band turns in a set of by-the-numbers boogie. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Perhaps a more fitting title for the 2006 Humble Pie compilation, Best of the Immediate Years, would be "The Complete Immediate Years," as it includes both of the group's sole releases for the Immediate label, 1969's As Safe as Yesterday and Town and Country, in their entirety, as well as a few odds and ends. And while the group will forever be best known as a loud and rocking blues-rock band (some feel one of the finest ever), these two releases don't always reflect this aforementioned style. Granted, there are such soulful yet rocking tracks as "Desperation" (which is a virtual blueprint for the style the Black Crowes would later adopt - specifically Chris Robinson's Steve Marriott-isms) and the group's breakthrough hit, "Natural Born Bugie." But almost all of Town and Country sees the group shut down the cranked amps in favor of acoustic guitar twiddling, including "Take Me Back" and "Every Mother's Son." Also of note is that these two albums saw much more of a songwriting contribution from Peter Frampton - before Marriott soon assumed full control in the songwriting department, which led to Frampton's exit. ~ Greg Prato
