FRANK SINATRA
Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and actor.
Beginning his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra became a successful solo artist in the early to mid-1940s, being the idol of the "bobby soxers". His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1954 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (for his performance in From Here to Eternity).
He signed with Capitol Records and released several critically lauded albums (such as In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice 'n' Easy). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records (finding success with albums such as Ring-A-Ding-Ding, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and statesmen, including John F. Kennedy. Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective September of My Years, starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way".
With sales of his music dwindling and after appearing in several poorly received films, Sinatra retired for the first time in 1971. Two years later, however, he came out of retirement and in 1973 recorded several albums, scoring a Top 40 hit with "(Theme From) New York, New York" in 1980. Using his Las Vegas shows as a home base, he toured both within the United States and internationally, until a short time before his death in 1998.
Sinatra also forged a successful career as a film actor, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity, a nomination for Best Actor for The Man with the Golden Arm, and critical acclaim for his performance in The Manchurian Candidate. He also starred in such musicals as High Society, Pal Joey, Guys and Dolls and On the Town. Sinatra was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. Sinatra was also the recipient of eleven Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Award, Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Producers: Sonny Burke, Don Costa and Frank Sinatra. Includes liner notes by Charles Champlin. In 1969, Frank Sinatra recorded a second album with Antonio Carlos Jobim. For unknown reasons, Reprise decided not to release Sinatra-Jobim, but seven of the ten songs intended for the record did appear on the first side of 1971's Sinatra & Company. The selections from Sinatra-Jobim have a decidedly different flavor than the material on Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, largely due to the charts of arranger Eumir Deodato. Where Claus Ogerman's arrangements were quite subdued and understated, Deodato's charts are looser and more relaxed; consequently, the music is lighter, more immediate, and arguably more fun. Sinatra responds to the arrangements with more forceful singing than on the previous Jobim collaboration, but his phrasing is still more nuanced than even his soft pop/rock-oriented material. Nevertheless, that subtle phrasing carries over into the second side of Sinatra & Company, a collection of pop-oriented tracks. Although the music on the second half of the album is neither as adventerous or as compelling as that on the first, it is still highly entertaining. The seven songs were arranged by Don Costa, who keeps the material shiny and commercially oriented. In the case of "Close to You," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "I Will Drink the Wine," "Bein' Green," and "Sunrise in the Morning," that isn't bad - this is material that demands to be delivered in slick, polished arrangements. Under Costa's direction, these songs are given arrangements that feature both strings and gentle folk-rock underpinnings, particularly strummed acoustic guitars. Taken on its own terms, the second half of Sinatra & Company ranks as some of his best soft rock-influenced material of the late '60s, even if it doesn't sit comfortably with the excellent bossa nova that comprises the first side of the record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

This 1962 release finds Sinatra paired for the first time with Neal Hefti, the talented composer/arranger who provided the Count Basie "New Testament" band of the '50s with some of its classiest material. The word "brass" is featured in the title, but one comes away from this excellently produced session with an impression of sinewy, shimmering reed charts; characteristic of the Basie band. The following year, Sinatra would record a classic album with Basie himself, entitled simply SINATRA-BASIE, with Hefti once more at helm. SINATRA AND SWINGIN' BRASS is the one of the jazziest of all Sinatra records. Only Cole Porter's "At Long Last Love" emerges as a definitive version, but still Sinatra was on a remarkable roll in the early '60s and, thanks to Neal Hefti, this bright gem has lost none of its luster.

While the title seems something of an afterthought, since Sinatra had already spent a generous portion of his career recording with string orchestras, the arrangements here do mark a change in the Sinatra canon. This album was the first to feature Don Costa, who would become Sinatra's irreplaceable right hand man for years to come. The songs he interprets here are mostly standards of the first order, Cole Porter's "Night and Day," Hoagy Carmichael's "Misty," etc. It's a testament to the power and invention of Sinatra's singing that SINATRA & STRINGS is not a walk through some old chestnuts, but a reinvestigation and revitalization of some of the sacred texts of popular music.

Recorded in the summer of 1962 and available only in the U.K. for a number of years, the album consists of songs by British composers, performed with British musicians, and recorded in Britain, while Sinatra was on tour. As it happened, Sinatra was tired and worn out during the sessions, and arranger/conductor Robert Farnon had written a set of charts that were ambitious, lush, ornate, and sweeping. Although the arrangements are provocative - occasionally they are more interesting than the actual songs - Sinatra was simply not in good shape for the sessions, which is clear from his thin, straining singing. This live recording from Las Vegas finds Sinatra fully in his element. An artist of his caliber certainly needs no contextualizing element in order to come across, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better medium for Sinatra's message. Vegas in the '60s was a center of unabashed showmanship, slightly crass elegance and a bourbon-drinking, dice-rolling, pre-boomer-generation sensibility-a perfect setting to bring Sinatra's music out of the abstract and into the realm of flesh and blood. At the Sands, the center of Vegas nightlife, Sinatra is the unchallenged king, and on this album he wears the crown with grace. And, naturally, he swings. Listen to his lengthy mid-set comedy monologue, where stories of drinking, gambling, dame trouble and his rat-pack cronies are shared with the audience in a kind of unspoken accord. Listen to his off-handed ribbing of Basie and his musicians, as if they were the Sunday-through-Wednesday house band. SINATRA AT THE SANDS is the sound of a man feeling his oats. For further proof, consult the Basie-powered versions of "One For My Baby," "My Kind Of Town" and "I've Got You Under My Skin" contained herein.

Recorded in 1963 between the ultra-swinging SINATRA-BASIE and SINATRA'S SINATRA, THE CONCERT SINATRA is a short, richly musical set of classic theatre songs, some of which ("Ol' Man River," the "Soliloquy" from CAROUSEL, "Bewitched" from PAL JOEY ) were milestones in Sinatra's earlier career. Here arranger Nelson Riddle is allowed to work with a large symphony orchestra and the results once more are a textbook example of fine orchestration. The formal settings do not prevent Riddle from handling this potentially "heavy" material with his characteristically deft touch. For instance, Sinatra/Riddle's sure reading of the epic "Ol' Man River" is far superior to the over-the-top Alex Stordahl-arranged '40s version. Sinatra is in fine voice throughout; no evidence here of the increasingly rough delivery which came to characterize his '60s output. The classiest of the Reprise albums.
