EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER

Emerson, Lake & Palmer, also known as ELP, are an English progressive rock supergroup. They found success in the 1970s and sold over forty million albums and headlined large stadium concerts. The band consists of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). They are one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands and from the outset focused on combining classical pieces with rock music.

The Very Best of Emerson, Lake & Palmer

The Very Best of Emerson, Lake & Palmer

$9.99

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Greg Lake (vocals, guitar); Keith Emerson (keyboards); Carl Palmer (drums).Producers: Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Peter Sinfield, Mark Mancina, Keith Olsen. Compilation producer: David McLees. Recorded between 1971 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Jerry McCulley. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).Pioneering 1970s prog-rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer were all about epics, doing everything on a grand scale, from recording to touring. So paring their catalog down to the essentials on a single disc is no snap. Nevertheless, THE VERY BEST OF does an excellent job of narrowing things down. One moment we're treated to some of Keith Emerson's trademark Hammond organ heroics ("Knife Edge"); the next, things give way to the balladic "From the Beginning," which highlights singer/bassist/guitarist Greg Lake's troubadour side. The band's passion for reinventing the classics in a rock format is exemplified by their takes on Ginastera's "Toccata" and Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," among others. ELP was truly at its peak when churning out extended prog-rock suites of their own though, as the presence of "Trilogy" and "Pirates" makes clear. This collection is a reminder that the all-or-nothing days of prog-rock ambition were not without their sense of exhilaration and discovery.

When Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer left the Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster, respectively, they created the first prog-rock supergroup. ELP's 1971 debut was full of just as much bombast, technical facility, and brash classical-rock fusion as prog admirers could have hoped. A large part of the band's appeal was the keyboard mastery of Emerson, who shows both superhuman chops and sophisticated compositional abilities on the classically tinged instrumental "The Barbarian," which opens the album."Take a Pebble" and "Lucky Man" represent the more pop-oriented ballad side of the ELP sound, for which bassist and singer Greg Lake is chiefly responsible. The instrumental epics "The Three Fates" and "Tank" find all three musicians interacting at a furious level, throwing awe-inspiring licks around with uncanny ease, with plenty of octopus-armed drumming from Carl Palmer. Epic, ambitious, and overflowing with technical mastery, EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER paved the way for the prog rock phenomenon of the '70s.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion).Additional personnel includes: Diane Duguay, Jacques Lareau, Jeffrey Meyer, Claudette Roy, Yves Saint-Amant, Marjorie Sparks (vocals).Recorded live at Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Canada. WORKS LIVE offers an interesting concert document of ELP near the end of its initial creative tether. The two WORKS volumes were released at a time when each of the three would only occasionally deign to appear on the others' songs; however most of the selections on this live album are from those sessions, forcing each band member to participate more fully with the others. One can almost hear the clash of egos, as Lake croons his pretty, romantic, acoustic-based ballads and Emerson demonstrates his ample keyboard chops on showcases that range from ragtime piano pieces to prog-rock barn-burners. He is, in truth, the Hendrix of the Hammond organ, with full orchestral backing. ELP were one of the few groups ambitious or profligate enough to bring an entire orchestra on tour with them. They reap the rewards of the added tonal colors on the second disc, which departs from the WORKS repertoire for "Abaddon's Bolero," and the band's adaptation of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Inside Emerson, Lake & Palmer: A Critical Review - 1970-1995 - Subtitle Dts

$14.99

Performing an ambitious blend of progressive rock with classical accents, Emerson, Lake & Palmer was one of pop music's most unlikely success stories in the '70s, earning a huge international following for their increasingly complex music; however, the band broke up in 1978 just as the rise of disco and punk rock was wiping progressive rock off the charts, and by the time the band reunited in 1992, they were flying the flag for a form of music that was all but forgotten by the mass audience. Inside Emerson, Lake & Palmer 1970-1995 - A Critical Review is a documentary which includes rare footage of the group in their prime, as well as an in-depth analysis of the band's recorded legacy as evaluated by a panel of rock writers and musicians. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). For an album that begins with an extended two-part piece called "The Endless Enigma" (bifurcated by something called "Fugue") and closes with a rock bolero, TRILOGY is surprisingly song-oriented and accessible. As usual, the long instrumental sections are dominated by Emerson's madman organ work and monophonic synth lines. These are interspersed, however with strong melodic/lyrical statements from Greg Lake, making the whole thing cohere more than anyone had any right to expect. The light-hearted Old West motif of "The Sheriff" (complete with honky tonk piano) and an Emersonized version of Copland's "Hoedown" add valuable humor. The ominous "Living Sin" features one of Lake's nastiest vocals, and the title cut ranks among ELP's finest pseudo-classical moments.

Toccata" is an adaptation of the 4th Movement of Alberto Ginastera's 1st Piano Concerto. The 1996 reissue of BRAIN SALAD SURGERY includes "The Making Of Brain Salad Surgery," anecdotes about the session recorded in 1996.Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (accordion, piano, harpsichord, organ, Moog synthesizer); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, electronic drums, percussion).Principally recorded between June and September 1973. Originally released on Manticore/Atlantic (MC-66669). "The Making Of Brain Salad Surgery" recorded in 1996. Includes liner notes by Jerry McCulley. Much maligned, although it is hard to understand why. They merely took what the Nice did one stage further as Palmer became the songwriter in place of Lee Jackson. The two sides of ELP were adaptations of classical pieces, which usually worked well. On this, 'Jerusalem' and 'Toccata' are given the prog treatment. The longer original suite 'Karn Evil' allows Emerson to let loose on his organ and piano. He is astonishingly fluid and imaginative. A wholly successful album, apart from the dreadful 'Benny The Bouncer'. Somebody, at some stage, must have thought it was a good idea.

Works 1 (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm)

Works 1 (Japan) (Mlps) (Shm)

$59.99

The larger-than-life music created by ELP was dependent upon the equally sizable musical/personal egos of its members. By 1977, the inevitable acrimony between the three had caused an aesthetic and spiritual decline. On the two separately issued volumes of WORKS, we can see a band on the verge of coming apart. Though the songs and arrangements are uniformly strong, there's precious little interaction. Ironically, this allowed the members' individual styles to be seen that much more clearly. The double-length WORKS VOL. 1 is arguably ELP's last great album. Taking the personal segregation to extremes, each member of the group was given one solo side (ah, vinyl) and they participated on one group-oriented side. Emerson is represented by a self-penned piano concerto, his finest straight-classical composition up to that point. Palmer exploits the full range of his percussive abilities on six varied instrumental tracks. Lake naturally offers up some impressive romantic balladry. The group side features the album's highlight; an orchestral epic tale called "Pirates," its intrigue-on-the-sea lyrics written by former King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield, and its music some of the most sophisticated ELP ever produced.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer perform Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition".Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Greg Lake (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion).Much was made of early prog-rock's fusion of rock with classical music, but ELP was one of the only bands to take that task seriously, and never more so than on PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION. The well-known Mussorgsky piece is a staple of the classical music diet, and a prime example of "program music," where related sections of a piece combine to tell a story. True to the spirit of the times, ELP attacked "Pictures" with both classically trained respect and rocker irreverence. The album, recorded live in 1971, finds the band turning Mussorgsky's work inside out, not just restructuring it but reinventing it for their rock audience. While sections like "Promenade" and The Hut of Baba Yaga" are essentially electrified, rocked-up versions of the original melodies, the band injects plenty of their own original (but not unrelated) motifs into the piece, including Greg Lake's moody ballad "The Sage" and the self-explanatory "Blues Variation." ELP is to be commended as much for its brash ambition as for its achievement in attempting a Moog-ified revamping of such a well established piece as PICTURES.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Greg Lake (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Keith Emerson (piano, celeste, B-3 Hammond & church organs, Moog synthesizer); Carl Palmer (drums, percussion).Recorded at Advision Studios, London, England. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistent lift-lock jewel box. ELP was always more concerned with the fusion of rock and classical music than any of their prog-rock peers. Accordingly they fashioned the title suite (which occupies the album's entire first half) in the mold of a classical composition, each segment meant to represent either a character in or a part of the story. Visually depicted on the inner sleeve, that story is a sci-fi epic featuring strange creatures battling in an alien landscape, none of which matters if you ignore the thin concept and concentrate on the finely wrought music. Musically, the epic "Tarkus" is classic ELP, organ and Moog synths blazing, Carl Palmer unleashing waves of tightly controlled polyrhythm and Greg Lake crooning authoritatively. Things shift a bit in the second half. "The Only Way" features Emerson's impressive church organ riffing and is structured in the style of a hymn. "Bitches Crystal" is a propulsive piece full of invitingly angular keyboard work. Things close on a light note, with the '50s rock & roll-style (!) "Are You Ready Eddy?" (directed at TARKUS engineer Eddie Offord).
