CHEAP TRICK
Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1974. The band consists of members Robin Zander (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar, backing vocals), Tom Petersson (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Bun E. Carlos (drums, percussion).
Cheap Trick created a substantial fan base through its own brand of power pop music with a hard-edged yet melodic pop sound that combined the catchiness of The Beatles with the speed and energy of punk rock. The Los Angeles Times has remarked that "Cheap Trick gained fame by twisting the Beatlesque into something shinier, harder, more American." Their biggest hits include "Surrender", "I Want You to Want Me", "Dream Police", and "The Flame". Cheap Trick also performed a cover version of Big Star's "In the Street" as the theme song for That '70s Show from the second season onward and the theme song "Baby Muggles" for The Colbert Report.
As of 2009, Cheap Trick continues to tour with their most well known lineup. They have often been referred to in the Japanese press as the "American Beatles". The Illinois State Senate has declared April 1 to be "Cheap Trick Day" in the state. The band was also ranked #25 in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Includes liner notes by Greg Kot. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios).Though Cheap Trick's second album, In Color, draws from the same stockpile of Midwestern barroom favorites as their debut album, it was produced by Tom Werman, who had the band strip away their raw attack and replace it with a shiny, radio-ready sound. Consequently, In Color doesn't have the visceral attack of its predecessor, but it still has the same sensibility and a similar set of spectacular songs. From the druggy psychedelia of "Downed" and the bubblegum singalong "I Want You to Want Me" to the "California Girls" homage of "Southern Girls," the album has the same encyclopedic knowledge of rock & roll, as well as the good sense to subvert it with a perverse sense of humor. Portions of the album haven't dated well, simply due to the glossy production, but the songs and music on In Color are as splendid as the band's debut. [The 2006 Japanese edition includes bonus tracks.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Strangely enough, Cheap Trick's big breakthrough, 1979's AT BUDOKAN, was almost never released stateside. The band had become superstars in Japan on the strength of their first three studio albums, and when they toured the country in '78, several of their shows were taped for a Japan-only live release. When the resulting album began racking up impressive sales in the U.S. as an expensive import, Epic wisely released it domestically, where it peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts and spawned the top ten hit single "I Want You To Want Me."One of the reasons for the album's success is that it resembles the raw, direct approach of their self-titled debut, rather than their other two more produced releases. Add the energy of a concert setting, and you have one of the greatest live rock albums ever. If you were to own only a single Cheap Trick release, AT BUDOKAN would be the one (the entire AT BUDOKAN was merged with BUDOKAN II for 1998's 2-CD set CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN: THE COMPLETE CONCERT).

Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Engineers include: Gary Ladinsky, Phil Kaffel, Todd Rundgren. Recorded between 1978 and 1990.All tracks havve been digitally remastered. This is sort of a "greatest hits" package since Cheap Trick has scads more great songs that could easily have made the cut. But if you have to narrow it down to 13 tracks, there's nary a dud in the bunch here (even the much maligned power ballad "The Flame" works in this context). The bottom line is that Cheap Trick's blend of Anglo-influences (Beatles, Move, Who) and American attitude made them one of the most inventive rock bands ever, and in Robin Zander they possessed perhaps the genre's most criminally underrated singer-essentially he's Robert Plant with subtlety and minus the macho posturing. Overlooked gem: a cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" which appends the psychedelic coda the song always deserved (complete with a brief sample from "I Am the Walrus").
Cheap Trick: Robin Zander (vocals, guitar); Rick Nielsen (guitar, mandocello, background vocals); Tom Petersson (electric, 8- & 12-string basses, background vocals); Bun E. Carlos (drums).Additional personnel: Jai Winding (piano, organ).Recorded at Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Although Cheap Trick's fourth studio album, DREAM POLICE, was ready for release at the beginning of 1979, it was delayed for nearly a year due to the surprise success of their hit single "I Want You To Want Me" and album AT BUDOKAN. When it did finally come out in September, it became the band's biggest studio album, peaking at #6 on the charts and going platinum. There are more than a few Trick classics included on DREAM POLICE. The fiercely rocking title track (one of the band's most renowned compositions), "Way of the World," and two epics-the nearly ten-minute-long "Gonna Raise Hell" and a seven-and-a-half- minute rendition of "Need Your Love" (originally released as a live version on AT BUDOKAN) are all standouts. You'll also find a forgotten ballad, "Voices," which almost cracked the top 30.
