BONNIE RAITT
Bonnie Lynn Raitt (born November 8, 1949) is an American blues singer-songwriter, born in Burbank, California. During the 1970s, Raitt released a series of acclaimed roots-influenced albums which incorporated elements of blues, rock, folk and country, but she is perhaps best known for her more commercially accessible recordings in the 1990s including "Nick of Time", "Something to Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up on You", and the slow ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me". Raitt has received nine Grammy Awards in her career and is a lifelong political activist.
Daughter of legendary actor-singer John Raitt, Bonnie Raitt was 21 when she recorded her eponymous debut album for Warner Bros. She'd already developed a solid reputation up and down the East Coast for her slide playing, having apprenticed for Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howlin' Wolf and other masters of the blues. Over the course of her nine albums for Warner, Raitt combined her earthy, blues-based style of singing with an impeccable taste in material-everything from red-hot blues classics to sophisticated songs by contemporary writers like John Prine, John Hiatt, Randy Newman and Jackson Browne. Recorded live in an old Minnesota garage, Raitt's debut is highlighted by ripping versions of Stephen Stills' Bluebird and Robert Johnson's Walking Blues, as well as some mighty fine originals. Backing musicians include Willie Murphy, Freebo, Peter Bell, Junior Wells and A.C. Reed.

In a career that spans four decades, Bonnie Raitt has won nine Grammy awards, sold over 15 million albums, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and earned widespread critical acclaim as an expressive vocalist and formidable guitarist (she is one of the few women to play bottleneck slide guitar). Since the release of her self-titled debut in 1971, Raitt has adeptly mixed her own compositions with classic blues tunes and material from up-and-coming singer-songwriters. 1989's Nick Of Time was a pivotal album for Bonnie, marking numerous firsts. It was her first record for Capitol, her first collaboration with producer Don Was and brought Raitt her first Grammy wins. At the 1990 Grammy Awards, she took home three awards for the album and a fourth for a collaboration with John Lee Hooker. Within a month, Raitt had her first #1 album - exactly 52 weeks after Nick Of Time's release and almost 19 years after her first record. The Best Of Bonnie Raitt features four songs from the quadruple-platinum Nick Of Time, the poignant title track, with its keen observations on aging and relationships, the rollicking John Hiatt-penned Thing Called Love and two Bonnie Hayes songs - Have a Heart and Love Letter.

Though she finally found breakthrough success with her 1989 Grammy winner NICK OF TIME, singer-guitarist Bonnie Raitt emerged from the early-1970s folk-blues scene with a soulful sound that mixed those genres with her own brand of rootsy country-rock. This program finds a pre-NICK OF TIME Raitt performing at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival in support of that year's SWEET FORGIVENESS album, which netted the singer her first hit single with a cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway." Raitt's smolderingly bluesy performance highlights that song and a selection of tunes from her first six albums-including "Under the Falling Sky," "Women Be Wise," "Sugar Mama," and "Love Me Like a Man"-for a revealing glimpse of a consummate artist whose star was still on the rise.
