BARRY MANILOW
Barry Manilow (born June 17, 1943) is an American singer–songwriter, musician, arranger, producer, conductor, and performer, best known for such recordings as "Could It Be Magic", "Mandy", "Can't Smile Without You", and "Copacabana (At the Copa)."
In 1978, five of his albums were on the best-selling charts simultaneously, a feat equaled only by Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Mathis. He has recorded a string of Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums that have resulted in his being named Radio & Records number one Adult Contemporary artist and winning three straight American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. Several well-known entertainers have given Manilow their "stamp of approval," including Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s regarding Manilow, "He's next." In 1988, Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, "Don't stop what you're doing, man. We're all inspired by you."
As well as producing and arranging albums for other artists, such as Bette Midler and Dionne Warwick, Manilow has written songs for musicals, films, and commercials. Since February 2005, he had been the headliner at the Las Vegas Hilton, and had performed hundreds of shows before he called time on his 5-year association, performing his last show on December 30, 2009. From March 2010, he has headlined at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. He has sold more than 80 million records worldwide.

Ceasing his romantic decade - overviews of the '80s - because, really, what `90s love songs are there for him to croon outside of "My Heart Will Go On" - Barry Manilow doubles back for 2010's The Greatest Love Songs of All Time, picking great romantic tunes from the 20th century, ranging from "The Twelfth of Never," "You Made Me Love You," and "How Deep Is the Ocean?" to "We've Only Just Begun," "Love Me Tender," "The Look of Love," and "I Only Have Eyes for You." As the title suggests, this collection of 13 songs is very much cut from the same cloth as its four predecessors, favoring the familiar to the obscure, relying on the same clean, efficient production that lets the songs and his personality shine in equal measure. Although this is certainly a modern production - albeit one with keyboard sounds straight out of 1987 - this isn't a record that feels contemporary, and Manilow doesn't reinterpret the songs so much as sing them his way. which is all that he needs to do, of course, as that's all that his fans want. In other words, The Greatest Love Songs of All Time doesn't disappoint: it delivers what it promises, no more and no less. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

What's a nice Jewish boy doing singing about Santa? Never you mind. Barry's been doing it for a while now, and A CHRISTMAS GIFT OF LOVE turns out to be his second album of holiday music in 12 years. Although this Brooklynite plays it safe with perfectly well done versions of perennials like "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," he also does a fine job going off the beaten path in seeking out unexpected holiday fare. "White Christmas" may be a best-selling Christmas song that's been done ad nauseum, but few artists perform it as a swinging medley alongside the more obscure Irving Berlin nugget "Happy Holiday." Making like a Semitic Sinatra, Manilow offers arrangements that swing hard thanks to conductors including Patrick Williams and Ray Ellis. Other surprising inclusions are Joni Mitchell's "River" conducted and arranged by the legendary Paul Buckmaster and a lush version of Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" that ends up being a nice respite from "Auld Lang Syne."
